Mission and Goals of the Undergraduate Program

The undergraduate program of the Department of Education is dedicated to:

  1. Cultivating outstanding secondary school teachers.
  2. Training competent educational administrators.
  3. Developing education researchers with a global perspective.
  4. Preparing versatile professionals with diverse expertise in educational training.

Looking ahead, the department recognizes that future society demands not only well-trained teachers but also well-rounded individuals with multifaceted capabilities. Situated within the diverse and intellectually vibrant environment of NCCU, students benefit from an inclusive and open learning atmosphere that fosters both specialized and interdisciplinary talents. The university’s wide range of academic departments and student organizations provides rich opportunities for exchange, broadening perspectives, and stimulating creativity to meet the challenges of an ever-changing world. With access to numerous options for minors and double degrees, students are further empowered to cultivate a breadth of knowledge and skills.

1. Focus on Secondary Teacher Education
The undergraduate program at the Department of Education has long been committed to cultivating competent and confident secondary school teachers. In 1998, it became the first in Taiwan to adopt a dual-track admission system, enrolling students for both primary and secondary teacher preparation. Although the primary track ended in 2009 due to external factors, the department continues to excel in preparing qualified secondary school educators.

2. Integration of Formal, Informal, and Hidden Curricula
Beyond professional coursework, students are encouraged to pursue minors or double majors to broaden their expertise and enhance teaching competitiveness. Co-curricular activities and student-led initiatives offer rich opportunities for personal and professional growth. Notable examples include:

  • Education Camp – A tradition spanning over 40 years, where students conduct week-long programs in rural junior high schools, gaining hands-on experience in leadership, curriculum design, and classroom management.
  • Love and Care Camp – Established in 2000, focusing on supporting disadvantaged elementary students, especially in rural and indigenous communities.
  • Education Night – A major annual event showcasing student performances and fostering strong inter-cohort bonds.
  • Freshman Orientation Camp – A dynamic, student-organized program to welcome new members into the department’s academic and social community.

3. Strong Collaboration with NCCU Affiliated Schools
The department maintains close ties with the NCCU Affiliated High School and Elementary School, offering authentic teaching and research settings. Undergraduate students engage in classroom observation, teaching assistance, and practicum placements, gaining valuable field experience. Collaborative action research projects with affiliated school teachers further connect academic study with educational practice. Additionally, service-learning opportunities encourage students to contribute to school communities while deepening their understanding of the values of service, empathy, and professional responsibility.
